Transitioning to college can be challenging for first-year students. We’re proud to say that road is substantially easier for CBE first-year students, though, thanks to the dedicated support of our H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentors.
H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentors are a group of 32 sophomore, junior, and senior leaders from the CBE who have committed to help make our first-year students’ start as smooth as possible. The mission of Helping Advise Willing & Keen Students (H.A.W.K.S.) Peer Mentor Program is to connect CBE first-year or transfer students to the CBE and help them acclimate to every aspect of Lehigh University. This yearlong program provides mentees with an early understanding of the University’s academic and social atmosphere, helps address transitional issues, and builds a personal connection between first-year students and CBE students with more advanced standing.
All first-year business students are assigned a H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentor who has a cohort of mentees with similar academic interests. Peer Mentors arrange individual and group meetings with their assigned mentees and participate in team-building activities, including interactive group events and topical discussions.
This summer, all first-year students will receive an email from their H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentor before they arrive on campus for orientation. Here are some reflections past H.A.W.K.S. shared to give first-year students a sense of what to expect from the H.A.W.K.S. this coming year:
“I would say that being a H.A.W.K.S. peer mentor was a very rewarding opportunity since I so vividly remember the feeling of being new on campus. As a mentor, I felt obliged to help make first year students as comfortable as they can with Lehigh and their experience in CBE.” – Michael Ricca, finance and accounting majors.
"As an upperclassmen H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentor, I'm fortunate enough to get the chance to share everything I wish I knew as a first-year with my mentees. Whether it's walking them through the highly anticipated registration period, directing them to their professors' offices, tutoring workshops, and secret study spots, or simply grabbing a coffee together to discuss the best food around Lehigh, I want my mentees to have a friend in me and feel supported through their transition to college. By the end of their first year, I hope my mentees have all of the knowledge they need to create their own Lehigh experience and take full advantage of everything that Lehigh has to offer!" – Courtney Wu, finance and marketing majors, global studies minor
“Entering freshman year I had so many questions that needed to be answered and my H.A.W.K.S. peer mentor was the perfect solution. My mentor was able to answer all my questions, both large and small, and help ease my transition from high school. Now, I am able to serve as someone else's mentor and I know through my own experience how valuable it is to have a student to look up and ask questions about anything from the dining halls to how to register for classes. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience and I'm excited to continue helping future Lehigh business students.” - Christian Doms, accounting major
Please join us in thanking our H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentors for their commitment to ensure the newest members of our CBE Community get off to a great start.
