Transitioning to college can be challenging for first-year students. We’re proud to say that road is substantially easier for first-year students in the BS in Business and Economics degree program, though, thanks to the dedicated support of our H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentors.
H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentors are a group of 26 sophomore, junior, and senior leaders from the CBE who have committed to help make our first-year students’ start as smooth as possible. The mission of Helping Advise Willing & Keen Students (H.A.W.K.S.) Peer Mentor Program is to connect CBE first-year or transfer students to the CBE and help them acclimate to every aspect of Lehigh University. This yearlong program provides mentees with an early understanding of the University’s academic and social atmosphere, helps address transitional issues, and builds a personal connection between first-year students and CBE students with more advanced standing.
All first-year BS in Business and Economics degree students are assigned a H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentor who has a cohort of mentees with similar academic interests. Peer Mentors arrange individual and group meetings with their assigned mentees and participate in team-building activities, including interactive group events and topical discussions.
The CBE Undergraduate Programs Office will begin accepting applications for the 2017/2018 H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentors. The application process will be from March 1 – 31, 2017. Applications are available in RBC 395. Selected applicants will be notified by April 7, 2017. There will be a “mandatory” training/orientation to be held on Wednesday, April 19th from 12noon – 1pm. All new mentors are expected to attend.
First-year BS in Business and Economics students are also assigned an academic advisor in the CBE Undergraduate Programs Office. The student will work with his or her advisor up until graduation. Expectations for the student-advisor relationship are articulated in the SOAR IN FOUR agreement that every student is expected to read and acknowledge no later than September 9th. Students can access and acknowledge reading the SOAR IN FOUR agreement online through a link provided via email by advisor Kimberly Bruno, SOAR IN FOUR program coordinator. The link is also available on the SOAR IN FOUR expectations summary that all BS in Business and Economics students received in their portfolio envelope on CBE Convocation day.
Please join us in thanking our CBE advising team and the H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentors for their commitment to ensure the newest members of our CBE Community got off to a great start at Lehigh!
A huge thanks to the H.A.W.K.S. Peer Mentors .
