Students Advise Advising Improvement

You are here

What is the quality of advising in the CBE Undergraduate Programs Office?  How would you rate your experience with your faculty mentor in your major?  What is your level of satisfaction with the level of support you received when declaring a major?

These are just a few of the important questions business undergraduates are answering in a CBE Advising Student Satisfaction Survey being administered this spring in the CBE Undergraduate Programs Office.

All students are given a CBE Advising Student Satisfaction Survey when they check in, and they have time to complete the survey before or after meeting with their advisors.  The survey is anonymous, and students submit the survey by slipping it in a box as they leave.  Survey responses are recorded in a master file that is updated and maintained by student employees who take care to be sure all responses are recorded accurately.

The survey process was recommended last year by the CBE Sophomore Council, as their class was the first to be advised by CBE Undergraduate Programs Office staff throughout their full undergraduate experience.  The Council suggested that the survey be administered in hard copy to all students to ensure the highest possible response rate.  This year, the group continued their leadership as the CBE Junior Board by reviewing survey items and making sure that open-ended items were included to capture as much student feedback as possible.

The CBE Undergraduate Programs Office will review survey results this summer, and survey results will also be shared with faculty serving as major mentors.

“Honest feedback from students is essential for us to provide the best possible support,” noted Director of Advising Twana Walker.  “We are really looking forward to hearing what the students have to say.”

The CBE Undergraduate Programs Office is also seeking to improve service by hiring a fourth advisor.  A search is currently underway with the goal of having the new advisor start his or her role this summer.  The new advisor will join current advisors Kimberly Bruno, Adam Troxel, and Twana Walker in the RBC 395 suite.

“It’s wonderful to see students so engaged in our advising assessment process, especially as our advising team grows,” said Dean Zalatan.  “We are truly grateful to the students on our CBE Junior Board who started the assessment process back when they were sophomores last year.  Their suggestions will ensure we get the best possible feedback, and we’re truly grateful for their leadership.”
